The bars provide a certain amount of traction, help support the heel area and prevent too much expansion at the back of the hoof (some trimmers which are trying to force decontraction of a hoof will "remove" the bars repeatedly, which can cause a visual change - but the internal structures are not there to support this expansion! It has to develop). New findings by Dr. Bowker of Michigan State University show that a certain amount of sole material (conservative estimation at 45-50%!) comes from the bar corium!! This material is produced at the bars and then progresses outwards across the sole, in a conveyor belt fashion.
